Temperature
IAP Impervious Aluminous Porcelain
Suitable for base metal thermocouples.
Low temperature coefficient.
Suited to kiln applications.
Requires support at high temperatures if horizontal.
1400°C
IM Impervious Mullite
For use with precious metal thermocouples
Great mechanical strength.
Relatively inert to suplhurous and carbonaceous atmospheres.
Often used as a secondary sheath with silicone carbide primary.
1600ºC
IRA Impervious Recrystallised Alumina
For use with precious metal thermocouples.
Fair thermal shcok resistance. High inertness to chemicals.
Ideal for reducing carbonaceous atmospheres.
High resistance to alkaline and other fluxes.
1800°C
SC Silicone Carbide
A Porous material with outstanding resistance to thermal shock.
Good mechanical strength.
Often used as a primary sheath material enclosing a secondary.
Unsuitable for highly oxidising atmospheres.

INSULATED
Hot junction insulated from sheath. Gives floating output with typical insulation resistance in excess of 100 megohms

GROUNDED
Hot junction welded to sheath tip giving earthed output and faster response to temperature changes

EXPOSED
Fastest response mainly for the measurement of air temperature in ducts. Restricted to a maximum operating temperature of 570°F
