Pt100 Sensor – Precision RTD Temperature Sensors for Industrial Use

Discover everything you need to know about Pt100 sensors, including how they work, temperature range, and key applications in U.S. industries.

What Is a Pt100 Sensor?

A Pt100 sensor is a type of RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) that uses a platinum element with a resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C (32°F). It's one of the most widely used temperature sensors due to its high accuracy, stability, and repeatability across a wide temperature range.

Pt100 Sensor Temperature Range

Pt100 sensors are commonly used across a temperature range of approximately -58°F to +1110°F (-50°C to +600°C) in most industrial environments. While the platinum sensing element itself, particularly if it's wire-wound, can technically withstand temperatures up to +1562°F (+850°C), actual usage is limited by factors such as sensor construction, insulation materials, and housing design.

For high-heat applications in the U.S., it's typical to specify Pt100 probes rated for use up to around 11100°F (600°C), with enhanced insulation and protective sheathing, for example our Type 18 mineral insulated RTDs. Always verify the sensor’s construction and maximum temperature rating for your specific application.

Why Choose a Pt100 Sensor?

  • High accuracy: Often within ±0.1°C
  • Excellent stability: Minimal drift over time
  • Interchangeability: Sensors conform to international standards (IEC 60751)
  • Wide temperature range: Suitable for both cryogenic and high-heat applications

Pt100 vs Other RTD Sensors

While all RTDs operate on the principle of resistance change with temperature, the Pt100 is the most commonly used due to its balance of cost, availability, and accuracy. Compared to Pt1000 sensors (which have 1000 ohms at 0°C), Pt100 sensors are generally more robust for industrial applications and easier to integrate with standard instrumentation.

Applications of Pt100 Sensors in the USA

Pt100 sensors are widely used in U.S. industries including:

  • HVAC systems and building automation
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • Power generation and utilities
  • Chemical and petrochemical plants
  • Laboratory temperature control

Their precision makes them ideal for meeting FDA and ASTM process control standards in regulated environments.

Wiring Configurations

  • 2-wire: Basic connection; includes lead resistance in measurement
  • 3-wire: Compensates for lead resistance assuming matched wires
  • 4-wire: Most accurate; cancels out lead resistance entirely

We offer RTDs with flexible leads, including PVC, PFA or fiberglass insulated leads, terminal heads and connectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is a Pt100 the same as an RTD?
Yes. A Pt100 is a specific type of RTD sensor that uses platinum (Pt) and has 100 ohms of resistance at 0°C.
  • How accurate is a Pt100 sensor?
Depending on the class (Class A, B, or 1/3 DIN), a Pt100 sensor can be accurate to ±0.1°C or better.
  • Can Pt100 sensors be used with digital controllers?
Yes, Pt100 sensors are compatible with many temperature controllers and PLCs using RTD inputs or transmitter outputs (e.g., 4–20 mA).
